The interpretation I tend to lead towards based on my reading is the one of a cautionary tale, in which Arnold genius is Satan and Connie is his victim. To me the story depicts fifteen-year old Connie, a typical American girl, who is seduced into what we assume result be her rape and murder. This story uses the proficiency of psychological realism, guiding the narrative through Connies consciousness, along with elements of gothic horror, to chilling effect. Connie, instead of joining with Prince Charming as she hoped for ends up with the Prince of Darkness instead. Arnold Friend can be cogitate closely to the devil in disguise, for instance his supernatural noesis of the whereab pops of Connies family, his ability to lure Connie to him against her will, which to me depicts an overpowering force of whatsoever kind.



I think that at the end of the story Connie will eventually lose her life to Arnold Friend which is not plainly the story of one girls fatal misperception of appearances that also a representation of a loss of honor altogether. Overall the story in my opinion is nothing to a greater extent than a feminist tale which suggests that young women of today and yesterday are headed into sexual bondage.
