Anton, Ruth, and the rest of the characters all go with believable problems, show growth, have entire and bad qualities, and show internal and external conflict.         I count on the novel Summer of My German Soldier was a goodly book. yet the book would have been better if Anton had not died at the end and Patricia was not sent to a reform school/prison. I liked the dowery in the book where Patty gets to go with Charline Madlee to the prison camp to help her with the article she was doing was good. The part gave to a greater extent details about Anton and how he escaped. So over all I think the book was one of those books that are good the first time you read it, but not one of those you like to read over again.
