Castillo de San Marcos
The fort in St Augustine is know as the Castillo de San Marcos though, that is non the only name it has gone by. Over the years it has as well as been known as Fort St. Marks and Fort Marion. It has flown many flags during its career, the Spanish(1695-1763) the British(1763-1784) the Spanish again(1784-1821) the United States of America(1821-1861) the Confederate States of America(1861-March 1862) and finally the United States. The decisiveness to class the fort came after the town was attacked by Sir Francis Drake in the year fifteen hundred and eighty-six. He was an slope corsair who led a fleet of twenty ships and two kilobyte men; they sacked and burned the town down. Then in the year sixteen hundred and sixty-eight Robert Searles, an English marauder assaulted and plundered the town. Queen Mariana of Spain decided that due to the threat of English colonization a fort do of treasure essential to be constructed. The fort was to be built of a stone called coquina which was mined locally on St Anastasia Island. The construction of the fort started in the year sixteen hundred and seventy-two and was completed in the year sixteen hundred and ninety-five.
