Compare and contrast catcher in the rye and Franny and Zooey

When writing an essay to compare and contrast catcher in the rye and Franny and Zooey, one may begin the essay by mentioning that JD Salinger, the author of the novel, attacks the society which is deceptive in its ideas, actions, words and lives just as it has been expressed by some of the characters in this literary piece.

The essay may also include things such as Holden Caulfield, who is the protagonist in the story, going through the transition from childhood to adulthood only to find himself in a crisis. Holden separates himself from everyone around him and tries his very best not to grow up. This he does by dwelling on the moments of his childhood and the life he experienced with his family.

Meanwhile, Franny and Zooey had already gone through this stage but Franny experiences problems living in a world where everyone only seems concerned with the outside appearances. Simply put, both Franny and Holden reveal the struggle that they are going through as they attempt to live in a world that is full of deception and people who are shallow minded and only concern themselves with their appearance.

From Holden’s perspective, the world, actually the adult world, in which Franny and Holden are entering, is a place which is very superficial. Holden, who is about sixteen years of age, is in a crisis in which he is forced to become and act like an adult. This makes Holden very afraid and he reacts to this fear by misbehaving at school and performing badly in school, which makes him get expelled.
